Ma’alot–Tarshiha
A Peaceful, Modern Galilee City With Exceptional Quality of Life
Ma’alot–Tarshiha is a vibrant city in the Upper Galilee, located in northern Israel at approximately 600 meters above sea level. Surrounded by forests, open green landscape, and panoramic mountain views, it offers a calm, clean, and high-quality residential environment.
The city sits between Nahariya and Karmiel, with easy access to major northern highways, employment centers, and nature attractions across the Galilee.
Location
Ma’alot–Tarshiha is located in the Northern District (Upper Galilee) of Israel, about 20 km east of Nahariya.
The city sits at an altitude of roughly 600 meters above sea level.
The municipality was formed in 1963 by merging the Jewish town of Ma’alot and the Arab town of Tarshiha.
The town is relatively compact — older data gives an area of a few square miles (the pre-merger area was described as 2.7 sq. mi for the city domain).
In terms of transport and connectivity: there is an intercity highway that connects the two parts (the “Ma’alot side” and “Tarshiha side”).
Residents typically have cars — while public transport (buses) exists to larger cities such as Nahariya or Haifa, many households find owning at least one car more practical.

Ma’alot–Tarshiha is known as one of Israel’s mixed cities: the population includes Jewish (majority) and Arab (Muslim and Christian, and small Druze) communities.
As of recent statistics: about 77–79% of residents are Jewish/‘others’, and ≈ 21–23% are Arab (roughly half Muslim, half Christian, with a small Druze fraction).
The age distribution is relatively young: a substantial portion is under 20 years.

Despite its northern location, the city has strong mobility options:
Easy access to Route 89, connecting across the Galilee
Short drive to Karmiel (and the Karmiel–Tel Aviv train line)
25 minutes to Nahariya and its rail station
Frequent bus routes connecting to major northern cities
Smooth access to nature reserves, local villages, and regional employment zones
Residents enjoy calm driving, minimal traffic, and convenient connections to the region.
